Do You Have A Story To Tell?

Come and listen, all you who fear God, and I will tell you what he did for me. Psalm 66:16

Books, pages, words, they form a story; People, voices, thoughts, they form a story.

We each have countless stories to tell, all forming the one of our life that is constantly being written.

So what is your story?

I’ve recently had a strong desire to share my story, one that I never thought would be written in the way it was. I did not believe that my story would ever be worth telling or writing about. I did not believe that I had the talent needed to share something; I never thought my voice was significant.

This is something we often come across, when we try to measure our significance in the world we tend to feel small. Now don’t get me wrong, we are small. Us alone as one person, surrounded by the billons of people in this world, what impact could we have? Practically none.

We want to tell the world our story, share what has changed our lives but the world is so big so our voice turns into a whisper and eventually we say nothing at all.

Change your perspective; the world is so overwhelming when viewed as a whole. Instead of letting the weight of millions and billions mute your voice, focus on the few; the neighbor, the classmate, the friend, the barista, the stranger next to you in the coffee shop. Instead of trying to set the world on fire with your words, be the spark in those around you. Once one spark is lit, the light will grow. One person will pass their spark to the next and one day you’ll look up and be surround by light.

We are significantly insignificant in this world of ours. But if you have a story to be told, a story that needs to be heard, it will be. We may not be speaking to masses but we can help the masses grow.

It took a very long time for me to find courage to tell my story, to share what I believed with others. We are in a world where opinions saturate our lives, where you can offend someone by looking at them the wrong way let alone by saying the wrong thing.

Our stories, how they were written, and where they led to; they can offend someone. Someone will always get hurt. Focus on those who will benefit instead, we are all writing our stories, we are all walking the same paths through thorns and roses. Your words may guide someone though the same paths you took. If your story can help at least one person, can light at least one spark then haven’t you already begun to brighten our ever-darkening world?

Your story is important, if you have something to say, something that needs to be heard then let your thoughts turn into a whisper, which will then turn into a voice, which will spark a light in those around you.

Stories tend to inspire us, yours is no less significant than the one of the person standing next to you.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
