A couple of weeks ago, I shared a list of things to do at MSU before graduation. However, now that graduation is less than a week away, I think it’s important to remind people (myself included) that you don’t have to have everything figured out at this point in your life. Here’s some things you don’t have to do before you graduate.
1. You don't need to 4.0 everything
After all, C’s get degrees! Unless you’re going to grad school, your GPA doesn’t matter that much. And even if you are, job experience, passion, and willingness to learn can make up for low grades.
2. It's okay if you don't land your dream job
Plenty of people hold a few different jobs their first couple of years out of college. You may not be qualified for what you really want to do right out of college, and it may take a few years working a lower-level position to get there, but that’s okay. Just don’t let yourself settle into a long-term job you don’t like. Keep an eye out for what you really want.
3. You don't even need to know what you want to do with your life
Now is your time to explore your opportunities. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there, whether that means moving to a new city or taking on a job in a different field. Try something new, and if you hate it, try something else. How else are you supposed to figure out what your passion is?
4. You don't have to be independent from your parents
It’s okay if you still call them for life advice – I do that probably three or four times a week, and I don’t plan to stop anytime soon. It’s even okay if you live with them again after graduation! There’s no shame in saving some money while you search for jobs.
5. You don't have to check everything off your bucket list right away
Who doesn’t want an excuse to visit campus again?
So, fellow Spartans (and others), don’t be afraid to walk that stage and get your diploma when the time comes! You have your whole life ahead of you to figure out what you want to do. For now, just give yourself a pat on the back for getting through college!
