You Can't Spell College Without a Couple L's

In college, many "L"s are taken, but sometimes these "L"s are really just lessons learned for the long run.

Sometimes, it's just not easy being an adult, and learning how to "adult" is the most difficult thing about college, next to the double-major workload, the part-time job you have all week that it feels like a full-time job, the stress of finding "the one" and going from relationship to relationship, trying to eat healthily and at decent times, but realizing your bank account isn't even in the double digits so you stick to microwaving Easy Mac, when 2:00 am is your new 7:00 pm and the list goes on.

We get it, college can be a hot mess. In reality, it just seems like it's our last chance to truly have fun in our lives, to goof around and make fools of ourselves before reality truly sets in and we enter the real world. We mess up, we mess up more, but we learn. These "L"s that we take are our friends. My "L"s in college have taught me so much more than the 18 years before college ever taught me.

1. Falling or tripping in front of a bunch of frat guys is not the end of the world for your reputation.

99% of the time they don't know who you are or care to remember who you are. It's college. There are a ton of other things to worry about.

2. Rejection is a way of college life... or just life in general.

Whether it's being rejected from asking someone out or rejected from grad school, someday you'll be thankful that the opportunity wasn't given to you. That just means that there is someone or something better for you and you'll understand when it happens.

3. C's don't always get degrees... if you're trying to get into Pharmacy School, Nursing School, Grad School, etc.

Most majors/pre-majors require a 3.0 minimum GPA but most require a 3.5 minimum GPA. C's do not grant you that option. In fact, working your way up from below a 3.0 is harder than it seems, especially when you have the mindset of "C's get degrees."

4. Roommates are either hit-or-miss.

You either love or hate your roommate, you're either soulmates or polar opposites. Either way, you become a better person and you grow and learn from them.

5. Falling or being asleep at the wrong times.

Sometimes you oversleep and miss a class, or sometimes you fall asleep while taking an exam. It's hard to get enough sleep in college, but hopefully taking these L's would help you to be better about time management.

6. Realizing you have forgotten to eat because your classes are back-to-back and you haven't had time to even think.

Again, time management. But life gets in the way and you have 50 things to do before 4:00 pm. It is difficult sometimes but it can teach you to be more flexible with your time and sometimes even packing a small snack can help.

7. Losing friends over something petty.

Losing friends is inevitable and life happens. Everyone is trying to figure out who they are and who they let into their life, and losing a friend or two just goes to show you who truly wants to be in your life and who really matters.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
