You finally picked a school and now you are following countless social media accounts to keep up with all the students entering their freshman year with you. You meet your roommate, you talk to kids in your major, you find out what sorority you are most interested in, and you are eagerly awaiting move-in day.
Here's the truth: you are not ready.
There are so many things college entails, the good, the bad, and the ugly. And it seems as though the world only prepares us for the good. We expect the easy professors, the classes that start at noon, the perfect roommate, the 4.0 GPA, the parties, the good cafe food, and to make a huge group of friends. But, the world does not prepare us for all the tough times, too.
You can't prepare for the professor that "does not believe in As" and destroys your expectations of a 4.0 GPA. Going from being the smartest kid in high school to fighting for your straight As is tough. But keep fighting. It won't be as easy but it is possible.
You can't prepare for having an 8 am three times a week. Even worse when the 8 am is a two-hour lecture. There is no way to prepare your body for waking up this early and staying awake through a boring class. But if you want that grade then you have to go. Attendance is part of your grade now, so don't ruin that. Be at every 8 am with a coffee in hand, because you will be happy you went in the end.
You can't prepare for your friends leaving you alone at your first frat party. The feeling of being lost, alone, confused, and inferior is like no other feeling. But don't panic. It is everyone else's first party too and I guarantee you will meet another girl there who is looking for friends. Be friendly and say hello. It is a good chance to meet new friends.
You can't prepare for your first sporting event. At a huge school, sports games are the heart of the university. No matter what sport it is, they all get overwhelming. As you stand around cheering for your team, you will truly fall in love with your school and become addicted to your school.
You can't prepare for the days you will sit alone eating awful cafe food wishing you were home with your family. So appreciate the nights you have at home eating your favorite meal that your mom just so happens to make perfectly. There will be nights you eat dinner alone and honestly, cafe food is mediocre at best.
You can't prepare for going through recruitment and trying to find a home somewhere within Greek Life. It is hectic, stressful, and tiring. But the recruitment process is so worth it; just keep in mind that in the end, you will find a home away from home.
You can't prepare for all the nights you will not get any sleep because you will be studying in the library trying to ace your finals. As you scroll through the pictures of everyone else at parties and having fun, keep your best interest in mind. College is fun, but doing good on your finals feels even better.
Finally, you can't prepare for the breaks from school. Schoolwork is not fun, but college is. Having breaks is always a nice time to relax and do all the things you don't have time for during the school year, but sometimes they last too long. Going back home to your friends from high school is nice until you run out of fun stuff to do. There is nothing like college.
You think you are ready, but you aren't. You just can't prepare for all the curveballs college is going to through at you. Get excited, but be cautious. Things do not always go the way the movies present them. Have fun, be safe, and prepare for all the bumps in the road along the way!
