You Can Shove Your Gun Control

Why must we blame guns when they can do no harm to us? Exactly.

If you think gun control is the answer, you’re part of the problem.

I recently got into an argument on social media probably three days following the events in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Route 91 festival over gun control and here are my thoughts on the other correspondent’s words. I posted on Ellen Pompeo (from Grey’s Anatomy)’s Instagram on her post regarding the events and the need for gun control:

“This is so mind-numbingly ignorant. Drunk driving, we blame the person, not the alcohol, shooting, we blame the gun.”

Someone responded with “Can it not be both?”

“Absolutely not. A gun is a physical object. By itself, it will not fire. A human must pull the trigger. A human being must drink alcohol to drive drunk. A human must be involved for a gun to do any damage. Do not blame the gun on this. It didn’t just go “I think I’ll fire and kill a shit ton of people.” A human decided that. A human decides to drink and doesn’t find a safe alternative home. These are all a human’s choices a human makes. A bottle doesn’t drive drunk. A gun doesn’t fire without the trigger being pulled. That doesn’t happen.”

To which she responded: “Okay, you’re one of those unwilling to try something new to stop people from dying. Got it.”

“and blaming a gun will stop people from dying? Obama did that through eight years of presidency and I didn’t see any positive results there; Orlando 2016? Aurora Colorado 2012? So ignorant that you blame an inanimate object for the deaths of others. Got it.”

So let me talk about my experiences with guns. I have handled guns. I have shot guns. I have hunted. I have cleaned guns. I have guns in my house. I have been around guns for my entire life and not once has a gun ever fired on its own, or harmed anything or anyone without human involvement. People that say that guns are the issue are ignorant.

I can personally say that whenever there is a mass shooting and if the coward who was involved is not killed or kills himself, and goes to court, I do not believe for one second that insanity is the case. I do not believe in temporary insanity. It’s bullshit to me. I believe that someone wanted to be an asshole and kill a bunch of people, and they did it.

They planned it, they committed the murders. I also believe in the definition provided by dictionary.com of the word terrorist. “the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, especially for political purposes.” A terrorist does not need to be from outside of our country. A terrorist can be anyone with a fucked up mindset to cause issues, and that’s one area I disagree with media outlets.

Guns have saved members of my family’s lives. Guns have protected our house from intruders. Guns have never done any wrong to any person without the involvement of a human.

So why must we blame them when they can do no harm to us? Exactly.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
