You Are Your Own Best Company

"Always Remember How Lucky You Are To Have Yourself." You rule.

For whatever reason, our minds are programmed to envision ourselves with twelve cats and a walker when we hear the word “alone." The word carries a heavy weight for us, but why should it? After all, being alone just gives us time to focus on ourselves. Society shapes us to be well, social, and depend on others more than our ourselves. Instead of the word making you feel abandoned, it should make you feel at ease. It's a time to take mental inventory and really reflect on a level which you can't when you're with others.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying ditch society and move to a mountaintop with a pet goat, but if that sounds like a plan, by all means. When your thoughts are conjoined with the vocalization of others, it can be hard to hear everything on your own mind. You know when you're alone for the first time in a while and your mind drifts to places you'd never want to revisit, or places you didn't even knew existed? Sometimes it can be haunting, but it's necessary to understanding every portion of yourself.

Being beside yourself is the perfect time to take inventory of these things, especially your dreams. Life can get busy, that's a given. We fall in to routines, hang out with family and friends and have to make a living somehow. With all things considered, it's pretty easy to lose sight of what we want to accomplish for ourselves.

There's a lot of pressure to spend your time with company. When you're a young twenty-something, your peers will think you're crazy for opting to spend a Friday night reading rather than clubbing, or they think something is “wrong with you” if you don't have a significant other. Socialization is something that is a top priority for some. After all, social media is all about how many likes you can get and how many people are seeing what you post. Everyone is so intertwined that it can be even a chore to separate for even a few minutes.

When you're by yourself, you start to notice more about yourself. There's no immediate person to compare yourself to. Not so surprisingly, you can learn a lot that way! You'll know what makes you happy and some things you thought did, actually don't. Most importantly, you remind yourself that you rule.

When you finally do get those solo moments, you know those songs that just make you feel at home with yourself? Mine is (Un)lost by The Maine. For me, it's a reminder that of the person I want to become. Sure, “easy” is the last word I'd use to describe life, but it's a reminder that I don't have to have everything figured out right now. I feel at home because it reminds me that I'm still actively striving for my dreams.

“Control what you can, confront what you can't,” are always lyrics that resonate strongly with those who also love the song. No one will be able to control everything, but confronting what you cannot, is huge. When faced with adversity, many accept defeat or avoid admitting their faults, but doing so doesn't bring you closer to what you seek to accomplish.

Through it all, you are you. There is no one like you. With all of your good, bad, and beautiful, never forget how amazing you are.

Always remember how lucky you are to have yourself.”

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

As this semester wraps up, students can’t help but be stressed about finals. After all, our GPAs depends on these grades! What student isn’t worrying about their finals right now? It’s “goodbye social life, hello library” time from now until the end of finals week.
