Being a light in dark places

This weekend was very special for me. This weekend I went on a sorority retreat with over 40 of my fabulous sisters, and we went to a lighthouse. Thirteen stories tall, ladders all the way up. It was hot. It was cramped. I was afraid of heights. But I climbed it anyway, and I got to the top. The view was breathtaking. I could see the coastline for miles. As I reflect back on that experience, I realize that it is far more significant than I had initially realized. Today, I walked out on a limb. I got out of my comfort zone. I overcame my fear of heights. I gained a different perspective, and it was breathtaking. I would have missed out had I not taken the leap of faith today and climbed the 13 stories to the top. And today I realized that this was very significant. This is how God calls us to be in everyday life. We are lights of the world. We are the city on a hill that cannot be hidden. We are called to jump out of our comfort zone and show His love to others. It can be scary. It can be uncomfortable. But being a Christian is about taking that leap of faith and allowing God to work in ways you don’t understand but ways that you learn to trust. Once you learn to take the first step in trusting Him, you can climb to the top. It can be scary, it can be intimidating, and it can sometimes be uncomfortable and messy. But once you have taken that leap and leaped wholeheartedly into His commands to bring glory to Him and spread His love, you will be able to see the big picture. You too will see the coastline. He will open your eyes to new perspectives and new opportunities, and it will all be worth it in the end. So be the lighthouse, take a leap of faith, and climb to the top. See what He can do in your life and the lives of others if you let Him. I promise it will take your breath away.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.
