You Are More Than You Think

A letter to the girl encompassed in earthly labels.

You Are More Than You Think
Katherine DeSonnaville

You look at yourself in the mirror and you see a flawed version of yourself. You hear the lies that society whispers in your ear each and every day. You're not pretty enough. You're not smart enough. You will never be good enough. You start to digest these. "Maybe if so many people think I'm not pretty enough, it must be true" you start to think. You embrace and live out these lies that society pounds into your brain.

"Maybe if I finally get that 4.0 GPA, my parents will finally accept me," or "Maybe if I get this new lip kit, I will finally be accepted by the people around me." After you are repeatedly told that you don't add up, you are going to start to embrace that. But it doesn't stop there. You start to alter yourself to become the person who will be accepted, not to be the person you are. This is so heartbreaking because so many women aren't even who they think they are because they have been conformed to the image that society demands.

Okay, girly... listen up. You are more than your GPA. That 4.0 may seem important, but your self worth is more important. You are more than the boy who thinks you aren't skinny enough. Yeah he's cute, but don't waste your precious time on a boy who doesn't cherish you. You are more than the new expensive purse that EVERYONE is getting because purses wear out, confidence doesn't. There are so many societal standards that show you how you "should live", but please please oh pretty please stop listening to those, dear. You are so much more than what society tells you to be because God didn't call you to be one with society. God didn't call you to have the cutest new purse and have the best contour. God didn't call you to have the perfect grades and the perfect life. God called you to be set apart. He called you chosen.

Psalm 139:14 reminds us that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. How incredible is it that the Creator of this universe spent time creating us EXACTLY how He intended us to be? Imagine that you made something for somebody and all they could do was sit there and critique what they thought were flaws. Now picture how God feels. He intentionally spent time creating you in His image, so why are you trying to find flaws in what He has called perfect?

It's time to realize that you are made perfectly in His image and not intended to be like everybody else in this world. You are set apart by our Heavenly Father and you are His servant each and every day. We have to learn to embrace this and get rid of our earthly labels. The world calls you broken, God calls you chosen.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
