Unfortunately, in today’s society, there is a very large issue with body image. It is difficult for many girls to feel beautiful in their bodies when they see magazines that promote photo-shopped models. I personally find this a very serious issue in today’s society because there are so many adolescents that struggle in silence with this. Between the photo-shopped models and the “significance” of plus-sized models, I feel it is time that somebody finally took a stand and spoke their mind.
Many adolescents in today’s society find themselves with body image issues due to the images of models that are portrayed on the covers of magazines and on television shows. Body image is an issue because they can inevitably lead to more serious issues. Unfortunately for many, they aren’t aware of the extent of photo-shopping that occurs to the models that make the cover of magazines.
As shown in the image above from Slink Magazine, many images are photoshopped more than just to eliminate an unwanted pimple or a bruise as many people think. In this image, the model went from a size 14/16, to a size 6/8. This can an issue for many individuals because they only see the finished product, making them believe that they need to have a toned stomach and legs in order to be beautiful.
On the other end of the spectrum, there are now many “plus-sized” models that are making their way to the stage. I see this as an issue due to the between a “regular” model and a “plus-sized” model. Why is it that an individual has to be categorized by their shape and size? I find this distinction between the two types of models upsetting, unnecessary, and unneeded.
Due to this distinction between a plus size model and a regular model, many adolescences find themselves with body image issues. This is a pressing matter because many individuals will do whatever it takes in order to meet society’s perception of perfect, even if it could lead to serious health issues. Society needs to find a way to change the way it looks at perfection. Body image is a rising issue for many individuals.
