Yoga is an exercise that inspires just as much mental growth as it does physical, and although it may not be for everyone, the lessons it can teach are universal. Here are just three life lessons you can learn from yoga, even if you yourself don't practice it:
1. The most painful moments are the ones that help you grow
Yoga is all about poses and movements that build strength over time. When you're holding a difficult pose, it feels like that pain will last forever. However, after a few short minutes, you're already onto the next pose, and your body is all the more stronger for lasting through your pose.
You may find yourself in a painful moment right now, and just like a hard pose, that moment may feel like it's lasting forever. Despite this, you have to remember that you'll move on to that next moment soon, and you'll be even stronger for living through this one. You may be tired and you may be sore, but you'll have made it through.
2. You have to learn to hold yourself up no matter how hard it gets
During yoga practice, you are really the only person you can rely on. No one else can hold you up or give you strength; no one can do your yoga for you. Still, many people love to do yoga in group classes or with friends, and that's because shared experiences and moral support can go a long way to help you achieve your goals.
In life, your advancements will always come down to your drive and motivation. The only person who can truly hold you up is yourself. Even still, it is incredibly helpful and important to know that you can go to others for help and guidance. While they cannot live your life for you, they can give you the motivation and advice to make the journey a little easier.
3. Remember to breathe
Breathing is a vital part of yoga. No matter how hard your practice gets, it is breathing that can always help you through. Focusing on breathing can help you find inner calm and strength during even the most difficult poses.
It is so incredibly important to remember to breathe. When life gets hard, take the time to acknowledge that it's hard, and take the first step in taking care of yourself and growing stronger: sit back and take a deep breath. Remember that from even the simplest reflex, you can draw strength.
