Yes, There Is Still Hope For Greater Things

Why we can hope.

Yes, There Is Still Hope For Greater Things
Sarah McKalip

So what is the dictionary definition of hope? " Hope means to have a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen. Catherine Pulsifer said, "Never give up. Have hope, except only the best from life and take action to get it." In the times of tragedy in the news and all around us. We can have hope for greater things. We can be the change the world dares to see. We can't give up when bad things seem to be happening all around us. Someone needs to see your light and your smile, to feel the hope of God and the hope of prayer.

In times of tragedy, things can rebuild. People come together from around the nation just to lend a helping hand. Thoughts and prayers being sent up from all around. People drop their small problems to go out and help. It's encouraging to me to see people come together in the times where the nation is hurting. Instead of grumbling we lift one another up in encouraging words and thoughts. We don't say you did this wrong, but we are just there. This is important for any kind of rebuild. Not just in the physical things but in the mental and emotional rebuild. God comforts us so we can go and comfort others in times of need.

When bad things happen, physical things can be fixed and re-built. However, the bond between people that happens in the midst of pain and hurt when tragedies happen is strong. We have hope in God, hope in prayer, hope in the community, and hope that things we be brought back to life. In the midst of the Gatlinburg wild fires, people are praying all across the country and sending a hand of help to those in need. I look at things like the animals being safe in Ripley's Aquarium, and find hope in those things. There is always a bright side, it is just our job to find it and work from there.

We can always better ourselves together. We can always learn, we can always better prepare. . That's what will make the change when we need to feel encouraged.

"No matter the number of times you fail you must be determined to succeed. You must not lose hope. Don't stop in your storm. Don't give up so easily." Tony Narams, Top Secret: You Fly Like an Eagle. Granted, this is easier said than done, but it's something we can all strive for.

Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future." We have hope that God will give us a future and restore anything that is broken. And that we can comfort each other in times of need. This is not the end, just a new start, and a fresh beginning to learn.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
