Yes, I'm in a sorority.
So, I'm assuming that you've already seen the letters I proudly wear sewn across my chest, bordered in a sparkling thread that envies a fresh coat of paint on a new sports-car.
I bet you think that's all there is to it, that being in a sorority involves dousing myself in glitter and singing praises about my fellow sisters and how we wear our letters just for show. I bet you've seen the Instagram posts of all of us throwing up what we know, thinking we do it just for the likes. I even bet you think that we don't care about our grades.
Well, I have news for you. There's more to being in a sorority than you could ever imagine.
The day that I accepted my bid was the day that I also accepted an entire family of girls who would look out for me no matter what, and I would do the same for them. A fresh piece of parchment inviting me to join a sisterhood would forever change my life.
During my process, we spent countless hours a week in the library working on homework assignments that my classes have pressured me with. Did you know that we have to keep a certain GPA in order to remain in good standing with my organization? How's that for not caring about my grades? If the stress was too high, or I became anxious or stressed, my sisters were there to help me out. It's just what we do. So yes, I'll sing their praises as loud as I can.
And what else do we do? We serve our community. We put in hours of our days that we could be spending watching Netflix to helping out in soup kitchens or animal shelters. We think of others that aren't as better off as we are, and we strive to make the world a better place.
Our Bigs aren't just girls who buy us pretty things and craft for us, they're our role models. They watch out for us and make us feel welcomed and happy. They're our big sisters, our mentors, our best friends. We love them with every fibre of our being, and they love us right back. And when it comes time for me to have a Little, I'll be sure to make her feel like she's worth everything in the world, and then some.
We laugh together, cry together, succeed together, and fail together. What one person does reflects on all of us. We are a family, a team of good-doers who like to see the best in everyone and do our best for everyone. So yes, I am proud to be part of an organization that is full of welcoming and kind-hearted girls, I am proud to wear my letters, and I am proud to say that I do not regret this lifestyle.
Yes, I'm in a sorority.
As for the glitter, well, we're covered in it. You can deal.
