If you happen to go on my social media, you will mostly see photos of nature, my dog, but mostly selfies with motivational captions. While I try to be more confident than I was in the past, being conceited is not the reason why I take so many selfies.
To be confident in who you are in a world that has standard stereotypes is a hard task. I think people should embrace the work of art that they are. When somebody takes a picture of themselves, it gives them confidence. It gives them feeling to know that they are beautiful in a picture and that is an amazing thing.
Throughout high school I always wondered if a picture of myself was "pretty enough" to post or if I would get any "likes" on it, but now I have realized that does not matter. While I did post selfies in high school, I was very concerned on people's reactions. How many "likes" you have on social media, does not define a person and their self worth. If I think this picture should be posted, I post it. If our lives revolved around how many "likes" we got on social media, would we really be living? That is for each individual to decide, but I know that "likes" should not define a person, including myself.
I like to pair up my selfies with motivational quotes. I have always been into quotes. When I post a picture of myself, a quote is to follow. Quotes are part of me and have strong meaning to me. My hope is that someone is looking at that quote and get motivated. Putting aside my own feelings, sometimes people post their own quotes to help others feel better. Personally, helping people makes me feel 100% better when I am down. I do not post selfies that just say I am "feelin' myself" or "I woke up like this". They all have meaning to me and I hope meaning to others as well.
I post selfies because it is something I want to do. I do not need others "likes" or opinions to define me. While I am confident in myself, I am not a person that would bring others down. I am there for anyone that needs a friend. Hopefully, one day we can all post our selfies without negativity, but for now I am here to tell everyone how beautiful they are and they should embrace their inner "selfie".
