At least one a day I get asked why I commute two hours each way to work. Well, here’s why.
I work in a trauma center that is world renowned. I see people from all corners of the world, and work with people that are prestigious legends in their respective fields. If I had chosen to stay local, I would be shipping the patients to the trauma center I work at. Yes, I’d rather commute two hours, than 10 minutes because at the end of the day, I’m learning things I never would’ve learned if I stayed local. I never would be able to say I’ve been in the same building as two patriots players (Gronk and Edelman). I would never have met some of the most amazing doctors and nurses that I work with every day. I commute two hours each way to work because I enjoy learning new things every day. I enjoy asking the people around me all kinds of questions. So when you ask someone why they choose to commute two hours to their job, at least be nice about it. I definitely don’t do this for fun. I do this because I needed to for my education and personal experience. I definitely do not enjoy sitting in Boston traffic four times a week for fun. I do it because I need to learn and need to experience. I need the constant explanations because I know in other closer hospitals, the answers are dictated for the patient but not collaborated on by the medical team. So yes, I commute two hours each way to work, but at the end of the day, I’m constantly learning.
