Yes, I Am An Arts Major

Art? You're studying to draw pictures? Anybody can do that.

Why would you even pay to go to school for writing when you already know how to write?

Art majors don't have to do as much work as other majors. So stop complaining.

You aren't going to get anywhere with a music degree.

I've heard it and I bet all of you have heard it, too. I was recently told by a man that "there is always food service." I was explaining to him what I am studying to be in college. He looked at me like I was crazy and then snickered those hurtful words at me.

Food service? What does being an arts major have to do with food service? It's simple; he was one of only billions and billions of people who all think the same way. Arts majors are going to college for nothing and they're going to be nothing. That's the impression that most arts majors have to deal with when trying to explain their aspirations to people.

College is about setting us up for the future and what we want to do with the rest of our lives. I don't know about you, but I am definitely not going to go to college for a law degree or a nursing degree so people will know what I am talking about and be proud of me. No, that's not how it works. Art students work just as hard as any other students in college. Every major is going to be hard. I don't think anyone can name an easy major. It's college, for crying out loud!

Being an arts major, everybody seems to have the most ridiculous things to say to us.

"You must have it really easy during exam time!" Oh, don't I wish. Exam time is the most stressful thing I have been through in my life. I don't think people understand that just like in any other major we all have to take classes that have absolutely nothing to do with our majors at all and sometimes that can be more stressful than anything else.

"You don't have to do as much work because you can just draw and write and play music and stuff." Listen, I'm not sure where people get their information but until you are up until four in the morning trying to come up with a plot or finish the same eye you've been working on for six hours, I don't want to hear a thing.

"You're never going to find a job, well unless you're a teacher." Even some education majors don't have teaching jobs. I have been working my butt off since high school. Yeah, it has nothing to do with my major but that's why I'm going to school. So I can improve in my career field.

There are so many more things I could list off, but let me just say this. I am proud to be an arts major. I love what I do and I can guarantee that any other arts majors will tell you the exact same thing. Yes, arts majors can't say they are definitely going to be a nurse or a teacher or a lawyer. But I can guarantee that we will always have a passion in our eyes when we talk about it. There are so many different arts out there from writing, to music, to dance, to theater, to painting, to graphic design. It's all out there and the field is growing more and more every day. Creativity is disappearing in the world and it's up to us to save it.

For anyone that always looks down on arts majors, think about this. Everything you use everyday has art in it. That tablet you're using has thousands of apps created by artists in graphic design, writing, design, and a lot more. That paper you read this morning was written by extremely talented writers. That cake you bought at the bakery was made by a very talented decorator. That music you heard on your favorite Netflix show was written and produced by some extremely talented musicians. The possibilities are endless.

I am an arts major. You are not. Before you say something against my major remember, 90 percent of the time you probably could never handle the major I'm in and I probably could never handle yours. That's the beauty of it. We all weren't meant to study the same things, and that's OK.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
