Why The New Year Won't Change Much

2017 won't be different unless you are.

Everybody likes to talk about how terrible 2016 was as a year.

They'll use sarcastic examples like Harambe's "infamous" death to talk about its negatives. And some will use legitimate concerns like those over the government, the beloved celebrity deaths, or the terrible terrorist attacks across the globe to refer to it.

And all seem to credit the year 2016 in particular as the reason for all of these misfortunes, as if 2016 specifically set out to make everyone unhappy or miserable. At the end of 2016 we can't wait for the new year to hit, because 2017 will somehow magically be better.

Unfortunately, chances are, it won't. Not by itself anyways.

Don't be tricked into thinking that just because the year changes, the way things are will. I remember everyone setting out at the beginning of 2016 saying that this will be "my year" and "2016 will be better than 2015". People hold the coming of the new year in such high hopes, when they can just take the initiative and change things at any time throughout the year.

The new year date is arbitrary, created by mankind just to measure time, which is another thing that was created by society. All of these terrible world events could have spanned 2 years if measured differently, but they happened to fall under 2016. The only difference there will be between before the ball drops and after the ball drops is that, psychologically, people will believe that something will be different and become more optimistic.

While I always suggest being more optimistic, I also hope people will be realistic. If they want better for their lives and for their world, people must not simply hold the belief that 2017 will be better and must actively try and better themselves to make it so.

The year in particular has no say over how you will experience it. I had a very good 2016. Some bad things happened, but a lot of good things happened, and my mental state throughout the year as a whole was happy. 2016 was a good year, looking back, for me. And since I'm sure it was for others, obviously the year number had nothing to do with it.

And 2017 will be a good year too, if I perceive it to be. The year itself won't be out to get me or bless me. I will take from it what I choose to, and if that's negativity then it will be a bad year. But if I choose to see 2017 as another year that I am healthy and alive, 2017 will treat me well.

If you go out simply wishing and hoping that some higher power will make 2017 "better" then you will be disappointed. And if you continue to view 2016 as a "year we don't talk about" or "the worst year ever" then you will continue to have bad years.

But if you see it as something you have control over, something that your mindset can change, then you will surely have a better year.

Happy New Year and wishing you the best for 2017!

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

As this semester wraps up, students can’t help but be stressed about finals. After all, our GPAs depends on these grades! What student isn’t worrying about their finals right now? It’s “goodbye social life, hello library” time from now until the end of finals week.

1. Finals are weeks away, I’m sure I’ll be ready for them when they come.
