New Year, Same Me: Resolutions For More Happiness in 2016

I don't remember the last time I actually set a New Year's resolution and kept it. I don't believe that you need to wait for a new year to choose to make a positive change in your life. Of course, there are various reasons people set goals for the new year, one being that there's more of a feeling of support and motivation, but my personal "goals" for 2016 are goals I've already set and have worked towards. On a broader scale, I am working toward creating and maintaining a happier and more positive life. I've learned that the things that make me happiest are when I'm surrounded by people I love, or busy working towards building my successful future.

Here are a few of them:

1. Be surrounded by positivity.

The past year, I really began to notice the choices I made and how they affect my well-being. The biggest and best change I made last year was to surround myself by people who support me and truly care for me. My circle is smaller than it's been in years past, but we are all so comfortable and supportive of each other. Whenever we get together, it's full of nonstop laughter and adventure. It is so important to surround yourself with like-minded people, you will only become more successful.

2. Continue doing well in school.

Another accomplishment I'm proud of from 2015 is that I ended my second quarter of college with a 3.9 GPA. My education is important to me and I'm looking forward to continue trying my best in school when I start the next quarter. Although much improved, I am still working on kicking my procrastination habit as well as increasing my organizational skills.

3. Work really hard.

In 2016, I plan to continue to be more independent. The latter half of 2015, I would have random tutoring, babysitting, and writing jobs here and there—but in 2016, I really want to work. I'm blessed to have a life where I don't need a job to support myself, but I want to be prepared and I want to start saving money now. Hopefully, I can find a "real" job in the next few months.

4. Make good art.

One thing I really plan to work on this year is to "create more art." I go to an "art" school already, but I want to create and design more than what I'm told to do. I don't even know how many times I've sat watching Netflix when I could've been drawing something, sewing something or making anything. I hope to be more productive with my leisure time.

These are just a few things I'm going to continue to work on this year and I'm confident that I will accomplish everything. Here's to a bigger, better 2016!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
