New Year, New Me?

The new year is around the corner but that doesn't mean that a new me is following close behind.

New Year, New Me?
Crosswalk

The end of 2016 has finally past. All the disasters, memes, deaths, and even the happy times are now at the point of being put into future history books as events that changed and shaped the world. Now we bring on the new year of 2017 with welcome arms and resolutions for the year. "New year, new me", right? Well, maybe not.

Every year, we make these resolutions to start working out, drink less, or eat healthier but after the first month or two we just go back to what we did before we started. So why do we keep doing these resolutions? Is it because of the illusion that we get a "clean slate" and can start over since it's a new year? Or is it because it seems like what we're supposed to do? Why don't we have a resolution to not have a resolution--an anti-resolution one could say? As crazy as 2016 seemed, it taught me and most likely everyone else a few things.

This year I finally accepted my body as my own and loved it. I learned that as long as I'm healthy and happy it doesn't matter if other people might not like how I look. My friends and family love me for me, not my body. 2016 was the year that being body positive was a major topic which is great for young girls and even older women who don't feel happy with their bodies because of societal standards. I also learned to be myself at all times even when I think that people will judge me. If people don't like me because of how I am, then that's just another person who is just living with hate instead of loving everyone no matter how different. In a nutshell, love yourself and don't change (unless health is threatened of course) because that is who you are and God loves you just the same.

Now something that everyone probably learned this year, from the deaths of several beloved and influential celebrities, is that life is short. If we want to make a difference, we need to do it now. Like someone? Tell them. Want to join a gym? Do it tomorrow or even better, today. Want to make a change in your city, state or the whole country? Write to your representatives. What I'm trying to say is that if you want to do something to better yourself or the world don't wait for the new year. The new year isn't the starting line, now is the the starting line. So if you're waiting until the start of 2017 to start your "resolution" is it really a resolution or are you just going with motions.

So in closing stay true to the real you, don't change for others, and do that thing you want to do now not later. Most of all, don't let 2016 get you down because it's only one chapter in the great story that is your life.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.

Yes, it IS a sport. Yes, I fall all the time. No, I do not ride in jeans with a cowgirl hat on.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.
