Being twenty will be one of the greatest years of our lives. This is the beginning to the future we're making for ourselves, but is also probably the weirdest, most confusing time of life that we will ever have.
Twenty years old and two decades of experience where we think we know how the world goes round. We’re adults now. We’re old enough to be old, yet young enough to be young, and simply living the best years of our lives. At least- that’s how it seems.
Being twenty, in my opinion, is a great age. It’s the beginning to our lives and every moment is spent bettering our future. At the same time, twenty is the weirdest age we will ever be. It’s a vicious cycle of making adult-decisions yet desiring to be a child, of working constantly without play, of losing and gaining relationships and connections, of being half way through school yet not knowing where our life is headed, of major change that is hard to understand, and lastly, of being 365 days away from the big 2 1.
Below are five reasons why being 20 is the weirdest, yet most awesome time of our lives:
1. Not being 21: This is self-explanatory.
2. We’re adults:
Eighteen marks the time when we technically become “adults”. Eighteen seems to be the golden age, also. Graduating from high school was one of the biggest accomplishments so far. We finished with meaningless classes, we feel like we’re doing something efficient with our lives by going to college, BUT now we’re here, twenty years old, half way through school, and still completely unaware of what we’re going to do when we’re done. In high school, life was given to us. But now, we’re adults, doing everything completely for ourselves. Paying bills, creating routine, and constantly striving to make something of our lives. Being twenty marks the time of our lives where we’re simply not kids anymore. It’s up to us to determine what to do with our lives, and most importantly, what to do with our future.
3. All work, no more play:
Being twenty years old means a few things. As said before, we’re adults now. We have to do everything for ourselves, which means making money for ourselves. Life is not cheap and the cost of being successful cannot rely on a part-time waitressing job. Therefore, being 20 years old means we work. All the time. And the worst part about it is that everyone has to work all the time. No more free time, no more parties, and no more seeing friends. Relationships and connections fade. Being twenty years old is only the beginning of our work-filled, no fun lives.
4. We’re halfway through with college:
These past four years will be the best time of our lives. It’s the only time where we get to depend on no one else but ourselves. We do what we want, when we want, all of the time. The university provides us with living and eating arrangements (that are very costly), classes, and a diploma to the rest of our lives. Life could not get better. The parties, the friends, the independence… BUT wait, we’re twenty. We’re half way through and this time in college is almost over. And even worse, we’ve been taking classes the past two years and still have no idea of what we want to make of our future.
5. We have major life changes:
Because we’re twenty, because we’re adults, living our lives the best that we can, everyone has a different path. Everyone makes their own plans and this time of our life is filled with a lot of change. People are having kids, getting married, going into the army, or possibly going to jail. Life is moving on without us and it’s up to us to decide what our path is. Accept change, and be the best person you can possibly be. Being twenty is a weird age; we’re left with confusion on everything in life. Whatever you're doing with your life in this moment of time, the most ideal way to live is to do what makes you happy. The greater plan is in action, and happiness is always a main goal. It's time to celebrate the life we've lived so far, and plan to make the next twenty years just as great. Although this is the most confusing and weird age we will ever be, make the best of it- because being twenty doesn’t last for long.
