Why You Should Say Yay To The Olympic Games

The summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro are in full swing and Olympic-fever has taken over, what seems like, the face of the Earth. Every four years the largest sporting event in the world, the Olympics, takes place for the whole world to get in on. One lucky country is selected to host it. The sports are divided up into two games, summer and winter. All countries get involved and have the opportunity to compete in events ranging from soccer to equestrian. What a great tradition that the world keeps, right? Often, people disagree with such an event and find something like this to be “boring” and “pointless”, but I for one, beg to differ. Here are five reasons why the Olympics are a great event.

1. Appreciation for the sports that often go unnoticed.

The Olympics include a good number of sports. Ones that are widely known across the globe, like soccer and basketball, but it also sports that are not often watched or celebrated. Although sports like Judo, Fencing, and Archery are not often aired, the Olympics gives the athletes that train for years in to display true talent and grit in what they love.

2. The games bring people together for the weeks they run for.

The games are such a large event and they invite everyone to share in something together, sit down with others, and watch the greatest athletes in the world compete at the highest level in sports. It’s about celebrating the history and tradition that revolves around such an event. The Olympics make for something very enjoyable for all.

3. Despite your level of knowledge in sports and how much experience you have watching them, you can always find one that appeals to you.

There are numerous options for those who aren’t necessarily sports fanatics to get in on the action and root for their home team. With each sporting event brings excitement for everyone and anyone!

4. The world becomes equal.

With all the issues, feuds, disagreements, and disputes going on in the world, participating countries put aside their differences to come together and compete at the same level. It provides a healthy competition and countries from all over send their top athletes to represent them based solely on their talent, ability, and hard work. Regardless if you are American, Chinese, Brazilian, Scottish, or whatever you are on the same level of play as everyone else.

5. The games have the power to unite a country.

Uniting a country in the sense that everyone is rooting for the same team, the same athletes, and the same country. That overall the Olympics bring about this passion, pride, and love that each individual has resting within them for their country. The games make you really appreciate and show love for the place you call home.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
