My first immediate, and admittedly somewhat hasty, decision was to root for the University of South Carolina Game Cocks. I mean who really likes purple and orange anyway right? Well luckily for me I chose the right team according to my friends and boyfriend (yes, you're welcome Corey).
The first thought that crossed my mind when I got to the tailgate at Williams-Brice stadium was, "What?" I had never been to a sporting event bigger than a baseball game at Fenway or a hockey game at The Garden. Never having been to a college tailgate I was surprised at not only how many people were there but also home many different kinds of black and garnet dresses there were. (Yes, this thought actually did cross my mind.) The spreads of food and tents throughout the lot seemed to go on forever, not to mention the USC flags and corn-hole boards everywhere. Every tailgate spot has their own music, games or TV to watch other games on and if you're a regular college football fan, this is nothing new to you.
I think what was the most striking as a northerner was the way that everyone dressed. It was like everyone got the same memo that either said look your best in black, garnet and cowboy boots or rep that jersey like you're the player. Of course, this is done at all big sporting events but there's something about the SEC that just has a different ring to it. It could be the southern hospitality or the way that sports fans have a the ability to come together over their love or hatred of a team.
The most memorable atmosphere was definitely being a part of the student section. After a few minutes of being dumb-founded by the chants and energy surrounding you, you learn (or force yourself) to join in on the noise. Being surrounded by classmates, new and old friends, strangers and opposing teams makes for an eccentric stadium, and it would be lack luster any other way.
Although this past weekend, they didn't pull off the W, it doesn't stop the great crowd and team from returning to the grid iron.
Maybe it's the school pride, maybe it's the fans, or maybe it's just the general love for the game of football. Either way, it's a experience that can't be forgotten no matter where you go. I may always be a Yankee at heart, but I never said that I couldn't be a Gamecock.
Go cocks!
