We live in a world of so much hate. So much violence. So much nudity. It's so important sometimes to just reflect back on who you really are, and try not to get swept up in all the chaos. For me, my mom has always been my rock. She has told me things over the years that have changed my view on the world completely. Here are some things my mom always told me, and I won't dare to forget.
1. NO SELFIES
You're so much more than that. Be creative. Be smart. Be interesting, and show the world what is important to you. Social media is your platform to present yourself to the world; not a petty way to receive peoples validation.
2. KEY TO RELATIONSHIPS IS HOW YOU FIGHT
If you respected the person enough to have a relationship with them, you need to fight with respect. Stay on topic, don't bring up past experiences that could trigger more hurt. This is true for both friendships and your future marriage.
3. IF YOU CAN'T GET OUT OF IT, GET INTO IT
Embrace every day, and take everything as a blessing. Even if it means taking that required class you hate—look at it as a way to learn something new.
4. NO RESPONSE IS A RESPONSE
Sometimes it's hard to keep your mouth shut—I totally get it. But you will feel so amazing waking up the next day knowing that you didn't participate in the drama. By keeping quiet it sends a strong message that you don't want to participate in an escalated situation. You either don't agree, or will discuss it a different time.
5. BE MYSTERIOUS
This applies to social media. Leave enough unsaid that someone is forced to talk to you to find out who you really are. And yes, you might have 500 likes for your booty pic on Instagram, but please cover up. You are not an aspiring model so keep it classy. There are certain parts of your body that need to remain special for someone special.
6. LAUGH ALOT
Be spontaneous. Listen to good music. Love people. No matter what age, be a kid at heart. Laugh at others, laugh at yourself, it truly is the best medicine.
As a teen, I always hated hearing these things. Although as I'm getting older, I find myself looking at society in a completely different way. This is a world I one day want to raise my children in, therefore, I want the world to be a better place. In order for the world to be a better place, the world needs better people. The only thing i'm in control of is myself, and making myself a person with values.
So through all the tears, yelling, and discipline mom always said, one day I would thank her... I'm almost there.
