Once I was a freshman in high school I began reading less in the middle grade genre and more in the young adult (YA) genre. I was getting too old for short chapter books about the struggles of pre-pubescent life. I started to read series like The Mortal Instruments, The Hunger Games, and Divergent. Though I still crept back to my middle school favorites like the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, my reading habits (obsession) stayed in the YA genre. I could easily relate to the teenagers in these books, as I was becoming one myself. I could swoon over the gorgeously attractive bad boys and cry over the heartbreak they put the main characters through. My fluid teenage emotions were compatible with those of my favorite book characters.
Now that I'm technically an adult (scary!!) maybe I should start reading books in the new adult genre, but why bother? While I do enjoy some adult novels like Me Before You, The Girl on the Train, and The Handmaid's Tale, I still keep gravitating towards YA books. Perhaps this is because due to the stress of college and adult life, I need a fantasy teenage world to escape to. Or maybe I still relate to YA characters. The books still have great plots and character development, while a lot of times protagonists in adult books just stay the same. YA characters go through heartbreak, loss, torture, and pain, and yet they rise from it. Why would I want to read about Jill's affair when I could read about Clarissa finding out she's the lost princess of a fantasy world? Books are made for entertainment and enjoyment. And I intend to keep enjoying my favorite YA novels.
