XV Ways To Serve In Your Community

Galations 5:13, You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.

XV Ways To Serve In Your Community
Victoria Hockemeyer

1. Pay it forward.

This is a very simple thing that can make a huge difference in someones day. Who knows maybe you'll even start a chain at the place you choose.

2. Spend a day making care packages and then taking them to homeless people.

Fill boxes with everyday essentials like socks, blankets, pillows, deodorant, etc.

3. Volunteer at the animal shelter.

Go love on the animals and help clean up around the shelter.

4. Pass out Bibles.

Give them to anyone who looks like they may need an uplifting word or someone your heart pulls you to.

5. Serve food at a food kitchen.

Love on the people that come through as well, they may need it more than you'd think.

6. Help sort food at a food bank/pantry.

This can get hot and grimy but in the end its so worth it.

7. Buy water bottles and pass them out to everyone you see.

Everyone needs to stay hydrated, this is a simple act of kindness that could go a long way.

8. Mentor a child at a local school.

Every child needs someone to look up to whether it be at home or in the community.

9. Donate blood.

Save lives.

10. Donate clothes and other items you don't find a use for anymore.

If you're anything like me, this would help me just as much as it would help other people.

11. Put together toiletry packages and take them to a women's shelter.

Pads, tampons, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, face scrubs. Things that some girls can't get ahold of on a weekly basis that I know I take for granted.

12. Write notes to people in the hospital.

They need an encouraging thought and something to take their minds off of their everyday struggle, a note can do that.

13. Visit the VA hospital.

Love, love, love on them and show them how thankful you are for their sacrifices.

14. Go greet veterans and escorts coming back from an Honor Flight.

I have done this before and let me tell you, nothing beats the looks on the faces of the ones that have served us after a day of visiting the nations capitol.

15. Visit a nursing home.

Again, just go love on them. It WILL go a long way.

5 Things To Do That Are Better Than Writing A Paper

Don't waste your time trying to write that paper when there are so many more interesting things you could be doing.

Writing a paper is never fun and is rarely rewarding. The writer's block, the page requirement, be specific, but don’t summarize, make sure you fixed any grammatical errors, did you even use spellcheck? and analyze, analyze, analyze.

Papers can be a major pain. They take up so much time and effort that by the end of the process you hate yourself and you hate the professor for making life so difficult. Questions of your existence start roaming in your mind. Am I even cut out for college if I can’t write a single paper? Am I even capable of taking care of myself if I lack the energy to open my laptop and start typing?

I can barely remember back when I was the only child. Most would say it’s because it is extremely difficult to remember things as a toddler but I would say it's because I was bored until my sister came along. My mother always says how important the "sister bond" is and with every year that passes I realize how right she is. Instead of writing a novel about all of the wonderful things there are about having a sister I decided to list a few of them instead.

It is the time of our lives that we are beginning to enter the adult world and most of us, if not all of us, have no idea what we are doing. It's like starting a video game, but skipping the tutorial. We're all just running around aimlessly hoping we accidentally do something right that moves us along the right path. Now that graduation has just happened, or is right around the corner for some of us, it's time to start thinking about how we are going to take care of ourselves once we are on our own.

If you’re anything like me, you love a good cup of coffee. My coffee always comes from Starbucks; I refuse to drink it from anywhere else. Over the years, it’s become one of my biggest addictions. College involves a whirlwind of emotions, whether it’s from the stress of an assignment (or twenty), or from fighting with your roommate. It can be overwhelming at times and it’s important to take a step a back and calmly think things over. Maybe gain some perspective.
