WVU VS WVWC

Why I Choose Wesleyan over West Virginia University.

Throughout my whole life I have lived only a short half hour drive from Morgantown, West Virginia, otherwise known as the central for West Virginia University. My whole family is full of WVU graduates, so I had always planned on going to WVU to be closer to home and closer to my family. Well, let's just say that was the plan when I was about 10 years old. Picking a college was honestly the least of my worries when it came to college life in general. I was always more worried about my major or paying for college. I had been saving for college for a very long time, but I waited to start college tours until I was in my second semester of senior year of high school. I actually only went on three college tours.

My first tour was at Marshall University, which I was in love with the big school atmosphere, but then I toured Marshall and realized that was not for me. It was not for me because of the big school atmosphere, but my family was still pushing WVU to get me close to home. Finally, after some convincing, I checked more about WVU because I knew that even though I had grown up around the hustle and the bustle of a big city. Well the big city of where I am from. However, after looking at WVU, I liked how much they had to offer, but I knew that I didn't feel a connection with WVU. WVU was a safe choice. Let's compare picking a college to picking a boyfriend. WVU was the boy that my family loved because he seemed like he had his life completely together, but whenever I got him alone he was kinda egotistical. He brags a lot! Even though my family loved him I knew he was only paper thin.

Then I met West Virginia Wesleyan College. My relationship with West Virginia Wesleyan was definitely love at first sight. This kind of relationship wasn't really understood by everyone around me because how can you know who you want to spend four years with in seconds? Wesleyan was not as well known as WVU, but I knew it was a relationship that I wanted to be in. I knew because the school pushed me to get involved. The school pushed me out of my comfort zone in so many ways. Picking Wesleyan over WVU was the fresh start I needed. When going to Wesleyan I knew four people who went to school there. I was forced to make new friends, and these friends I wouldn't trade for anything in the world. Wesleyan gave me my own spotlight. There wasn't anything that I had to live up to. I automatically became an adult version of myself without very much effort. Wesleyan is the love of my life. This love is so much better than WVU could have ever been for me.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
