Following Saturday's huge win against Baylor, a small group of people preceded to treat Morgantown as if the apocalypse was near and the only way to go out was to burn the whole city down. The scene was crazier than the second-half of Gone Girl. Fires and damaged property were among the most notable outcomes that resulted from the victory.
Morgantown is definitely no stranger to excessive celebrations following huge wins, but the events that occurred following the Baylor game were simply ridiculous. It's a shame that the game in itself was not the focus of attention and that the university is being viewed in a laughable manner.
The actions of a select few do not present the rest of the student body. The school is made up of students who are more than capable of celebrating wins in a usual fashion; not just rowdy, couch-burners. And the fact that the school is once again seen as the latter is a shame.
The city of Morgantown is made up of some of the most passionate fans I've ever seen and celebrate their wins with class and pride. They are incredibly invested in the success of their football team and exemplify the "die-hard" attitude passionate fans possess. With the actions that have unfolded, these fans have reason to doubt just how much students care about how this school is perceived by the public. There needs to be a larger sense of pride to discontinue acting as if it's a huge surprise taking down an opponent like Baylor. We are a major college football team and have been for some time. We need to act as if we are used to winning the big game.
