Why I Write

Why I Write
WiseGeek

When it comes to writing, it is a hobby and interest I have always had. It seems as though I always preferred the assignments in school where I could write an essay or report. Presentations terrified me, sports were my downfall, and music was never an ability I had. But writing was that thing I could turn to with comfort and confidence. Whether is was an informative essay, a book report, an opinion based article, or just a short story for English class, I could find solace in putting words onto paper.

Then I realized that writing bled into more than just my academic career; it was something I wanted to do even outside of the classroom. Even later did I realize that writing is an art form of its own. Just like musicians make songs, artists paint and draw beautiful pictures, and dancers move with elegance and grace, writers also create art. I read a quote that said something along the lines of, writers paint pictures of color using words of black and white. I realize how true that is.

For me, writing is a way to express myself, whether it be emotions or thoughts or stories that I feel should be told. Many times, I don't know what emotions are there or what thoughts exist in my mind or what story is begging me to tell it until after I have written it all down. That's the beauty of writing. It has the power to take you places and show you things you were not previously aware of. It can be an escape and safe haven to fight off the bad days that life inevitably throws at us.

I hope to always keep my passion for writing. I know that I still will write even if not another single soul reads it. Because honestly, I do not write for other people. I write for myself. I write because it brings me peace, joy, and because sometimes things just need to be said.

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
