I hate writer’s block. Anyone and everyone who is a writer has been there before. You sit there in front of your laptop or notebook and can’t help but feel as if the empty page is mocking you.
It’s hands down one of the most frustrating things to deal with. So to help you and my future self, I’ve compiled a list of writing prompts and ideas to get those creative juices flowing.
1. Write about someone you admire. What is it about them that makes them worthwhile?
2. Write about making mistakes. What have you learned from them?
3. Do you remember the last time your emotions got the best of you? Write about that experience. What did you learn from it?
4. Almost everyone has a favorite season. What’s yours and why?
5. Do you have any study tips or tricks? I know I could use them.
6. Write about your favorite animal. Personally, I can go on for hours about why dogs are way too precious for this world.
7. Do you have one moment in time you wish you could freeze and hold on to forever? Who were you with? Where were you? What made it special?
8. What’s going on in the news today? Do you have a strong opinion about the topics discussed? Then voice it.
9. Have you ever been to a party that you didn’t want to end or one you’ve desperately needed to escape? Write about it.
10. Do you believe “every cloud has a silver lining”? Write about the good that can come out of a bad situation.
11. Write about your family. Do you think your mom is the best mom in the whole wide world? Is your brother your absolute best friend? Tell us why.
12. What makes you who you are? Everyone has something that makes them unique or makes them stand out.
13. Talk to your grandparents or a great aunt/uncle. Write about an impactful moment in their lifetime.
14. Get inspired by colors. Reds. Blues. Yellows. What do they make you think of? What do they make you feel?
15. Do you consider yourself a foodie? Do you know all the best local places to grab a bite? List them and tell us why they’re worth trying out.
16. Have you ever met an artist, celebrity, or public figure that you really admire? Were they what you expected? Why do you think some of us get so star struck?
17. No one is perfect. There is beauty in being flawed. Create a poem or journal entry about the beauty of being imperfectly perfect.
18. As human beings, we often dwell on the past or worry about the future. Write about the importance of living in the moment and focusing on the now.
19. Do you know a lot about fashion? What’s in and what’s out? Or maybe you consider yourself fashion-forward and ahead of the trends. You could talk about where you gain fashion inspiration from and places you shop.
20. What’s your favorite TV show? Write a review and let everyone know why it’s worth checking out.
21. Do you remember your first concert/show? How was the crowd? What was the energy in the room like?
22. Write about your favorite hobby. Do you like to shoot photos? Do you play any instruments? Maybe you’re into coding or computer programming. Tell us about that.
23. Do you have a younger sibling or a niece/nephew? Talk to them about what’s going on in their lives. Write about what it’s like to view the world through their eyes.
24. Are you the queen/king of procrastination? Do you wait until the last possible second to get started on your assignments? Write about what that’s like.
25. What’s your favorite home cooked meal/dessert? Maybe it's your mom’s Sunday gravy. (It’s gravy, not sauce. I’m Italian. Don’t fight me on this.) It could be your aunt’s eggplant parmesan, or even your great uncle’s anisette cookies. Talk about what it’s like to sit down and eat together as a family. Maybe even share the recipe.
26. Do you love DIY projects? Are you constantly looking through Pinterest to see what new crafts you could try? List some of them.
27. What’s your favorite album? Who’s your favorite artist? Talk about their music and what it means to you.
28. Everyone has a guilty pleasure. Some people are really into disco music. Others love to binge watch shows about the Kardashians. What’s yours?
29. How do you think it would feel to be off the Internet for a whole year? No emails. No social media. No Netflix. Do you think you could do it?
30. Talk about the overall experience of writer’s block. Talk about what it’s like to sit in front of your computer/notebook and not be able to put your ideas into words. Talk about the frustration. After all, that’s how I came up with this list.
