The Gift And Privilege Of Writing

Is writing a talent or a skill that can be acquired by anyone?

I think my mind is filled with lots of beautiful thoughts and I, for some reason, seem to think those thoughts are something to be shared with the world. However, maybe everyone thinks in the same way as me; does everyone have such beautiful thoughts as these? People often say I have a way with words, but why is that? Is it a God-given talent? Or is it just that it's harder for people to communicate their just as beautiful thoughts. Maybe it's simply the way I speak and not actually anything to do with my thoughts. Maybe I'm just thinking, as does everyone else on this huge planet. But then again, I think some people, like authors, for example, are more interesting to listen to then say some professors or scientists with their lengthy lab report seminars.

As I sit on a plane and ponder these thoughts, I think about how small the world looks from up there and how tiny we all are on this planet. Though some people find themselves more important than they really are in the scheme of things, others don't realize how big of a deal they honestly are. There are amazing people all over this planet.

It makes me sad that, I'm pretty sure many other children have this same writing talent as I, but not the education to enrich themselves in such miraculous ways in writing or speech even. In my sorority, Pi Beta Phi, we talk a lot about literacy, as it is our philanthropy. This has really expanded my knowledge of illiterate children and adults all over the world. I was even more impacted by my gained interest of literacy when I truly gained an understanding for how vital the skill of literacy really is. Like the world would not be run the same if we were all illiterate.

Without writing skills, one would also be incapable of reading. Without reading, there can be no learning. The ability to truly comprehend words and form beautiful sentences of your own is truly an art. And once this skill is achieved, it's easier to understand another's thoughts and then form opinions of your own. These life skills can help people to become more immersed in their own thoughts and feelings, and essentially life.

Though not everyone chooses to share their thoughts, they deserve to be capable of doing so. I really do think it's a human right. I wish that everyone could be given an education as good or better than mine, all around the world, because writing gives people a voice. I am certain that women and men all over this country have beautiful thoughts that just can't be shared, for they are trapped in this cage called illiteracy. So, how I think of it is, with the power of literacy, the power of writing is born. Once one is able to understand, they are able to write, and then they are able to share all their beautiful thoughts.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
