Why Writing For The Odyssey Is A Wonderful Experience
Centre News via Centre College

I began writing for The Odyssey over three months ago. Over the past three months, I have grown so much as a writer and feel much more confident in my ability to convey my thoughts and ideas to whoever reads my articles. In the beginning, I was worried that people wouldn't read my articles or agree with what I have to say, but I now realize that both of these worries were irrational--in fact, I like when people disagree with me, because that is when we start to learn and expand our minds.

Writing for this organization has not only helped me hone my writing skills, but it has also given me the chance to discover and talk about some of my own passions. For example, I am very passionate about veganism and health, and this platform has given me an opportunity to talk about these two interests of mine freely, among many other interests that I have.

As the Editor-in-Chief for The Odyssey at The University of Louisiana Monroe, I try my best to convey how rewarding and fun writing for The Odyssey can be. I always tell my friends and peers about this organization, hoping to spark their interest. Of course, The Odyssey is a commitment, just like being in any college organization or having a job, but it is a rewarding commitment nonetheless.

Each week when I sit down to write an article for The Odyssey, I always ask myself, "What is it that I want to get off of my mind this week?" By using this platform to get things off of my chest, I am not only helping myself, but also hopefully helping others who are in a similar situation. I hope that when people see my articles, they are excited to read them and are inspired by what I have to say.

If I had to ask myself what the most rewarding part of writing for The Odyssey has been, I would give two answers. First, I have learned how to care less about if and how people will judge me for what I write about. And second, I have met some pretty amazing people in The Odyssey organization itself. From my Managing Editor to my fellow team members, I have made friends who also love to write and speak up about important issues or personal interests. This experience has truly been as amazing one and I can't wait to see what the future has in store for me, my writers, and The Odyssey organization!

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
