Strong and bold. Those are the right words to describe Rupi Kaur's beautiful creations. 23-year-old poetess, writer, and artist, Rupi Kaur was Born in Punjab, a state in northeast India. Kaur later immigrated to Canada
with her mom at the age of 3.Kaur discovered her love for writing when she took a creative writing course
in college. That served as the spark that lead her to begin sharing her work online. In October, 2015 Kaur published her debut collection of poetry and pose, in the New York Times bestseller Milk and Honey.Kaur's poems explore love, relationships, abuse, womanhood, resilience, recovery, immigrants, having accents, and being a woman of color. It is undeniable the connection one feels when reading her poems. One feels an overflow of emotions ranging from empowerment, happiness, sadness, and healing.
The issues of having immigrant parents, being a woman of color, and the problem the world has with accents, are what I deeply connect to the most. I am the child of immigrant parents, I have brown skin, and my parents have thick accents. Rupi Kaur's poems target all of these issues with eloquence and fill me with hope, confidence, and most importantly, with being thankful and proud of my roots, my mother and father, my skin color, and being a women.
1. On having an accent as being a beautiful thing and how that should never be looked down upon.
2. On the difficulties of being a first generation immigrant.
3. On being a woman of colour.
4. On speaking broken English and the reflection of the difficulties of moving to a foreign country.
5. On the infinite love that a mother gives to her children.
