Why I Write For Odyssey

I’ve been a “content creator” for Odyssey for a couple months now and it’s been the most surprising journey. Many have asked me why I write, and why for Odyssey specifically. So, for all of you inquiring minds, allow me to shed some light on it.

I loving writing, whether etching the words out with ink onto paper or clacking away at my computer, words work for me. If you ask my, fiancé, he’ll likely tell you one of the biggest causes of misunderstanding between us is my lack of ability to verbally process [verbally meaning out loud]. I couldn’t agree more. While every once in a great while I’ll have a storm of words and talk non-stop for an hour, I’m far more quiet than talkative. I process through writing-- writing love letters to God, jotting down notes in class, inking a calligraphy piece, and writing letters to my fiancé. The written word helps me makes sense of this beautifully crazy world. What better way to express my heart than by writing for Odyssey?

I was contacted by a dear friend and Odyssey superstar Lily Moe about becoming a content creator for Odyssey. Check out her amazing articles here! It was with great reserve, I agreed. With the intent to express Christ’s love, I stepped out into this world, and I couldn’t be happier I chose too. The last thing I want is to be considered another armchair millennial blogger with great opinions and no life of service or work to back them up. I pray that a voice of humility [and occasionally of humor] is expressed in my work. One of my favorite parts about Odyssey is the opportunity to generate discussion. While a lot of my article are more “food for thought” than heated, controversial issues, the Odyssey platform is designed for both! It provides the chance to stir dialogue about any and every issue, allowing for people’s voices to be heard. It broadens my scope of empathy and understanding reading about other’s stories, struggles, and victories.

In my posting of articles, I pray I honor God by sharing a glimmer of Him through my writing. His words are the ultimate source of life and hope; my words reflect back only a small portion. I couldn’t be more thankful to Odyssey for providing such an opportunity to grow in my processing through writing. Every weekly article is still a leap of faith but I’m beginning to enjoy it. God’s grace abounds as I consider various topics and allow my heart to be shared with others. I couldn’t ask for anything better.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

10 Reasons To Thank Your Best Friend

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
