Writing Is More Than Just A Chore, It's Cathartic

To some, writing may be a hassle, but for me, it's so much more than that.

I've been writing for The Odyssey Online for over a year now and through that time, as well as in my own personal life, I have come to consider the question of: "Why I write?" Sure, this question has been presented time and time again all across social media platforms, but each writer is different. Who they are, where they came from, and how they got to this point in their life are all questions that we may ask ourselves when we invest our time in reading (or watching) a content creator.

Now I know I may not be the most popular person out there. Heck, its a gamble to predict who is going to be reading my articles every week. But here I am, presenting the answer to the one question, to you, my reader.

I write as a means of self-expression.

Aside from being a proud INFP with a need for a creative outlet, I have found that writing allows me to communicate with people, far beyond writing an article or writing short stories. Any form of oral communication, whether it was speaking to a class, speaking in public, or speaking in an interview, has always overwhelmed me as a person. I deal with social anxiety on a daily basis, so speaking to anyone is one of the hardest things for me to do. However, when I write, especially in online spaces, I feel more at ease with the world. I get to speak to a general audience and express myself in ways I would be too scared to do in public. Even though I may not know who reads any of my work, I know that I have a voice in this world that can be heard.

I write to finish stories never told.

One of the main aspects of my writing is my fiction content. At the heart of it all, I am a storyteller. Someone who would conjure up stories and yearn for the chance to share it with anyone who might listen. Through this viewpoint, I have written various fictional pieces, published and unpublished, as well as develop non-fictional pieces, like my articles. I do this, not for the satisfaction of claiming to be published or to have the title of "Writer," but for the pleasure of knowing that some of my pieces out there can enlighten someone on a bad day or teach a lesson that hasn't been taught.

Because for me, writing isn't about a title or publications. Writing is about sharing information and knowledge with others as effectively as you can and impacting someone else's life. As content creators, of any platform, most of us strive to entertain our readers or viewers with our content and (hopefully) inspire them to look beyond what is "inside the box." We strive for making a difference, and that's what we're doing.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
