Why I Write
Antonio Litterio

What was your favorite class in high school? That's a pretty standard question when you're getting to know somebody, I promise it'll spark a good conversation. "Science was my favorite because I love space and molecules." "PE because I'm a jock who loves to show off to the hot chicks." I'm kidding about the last one, please don't beat me up. For me, English and writing were the two big ones. I love immersing myself in a fictional universe and looking for hidden meanings in between the lines. That's my idea of a party, pretty exciting I know. That's why I write, though. To bring ideas to life is a superpower to me, it gives me control of a universe that I create, with my own rules and my own morals being the law of the land.

Writing gives me this tunnel vision, locking my view in on whatever I'm doing and blocking out every other outside source. When I have that pen in my hand, or when I'm staring at that blank word document, all I can think about is how freakin' awesome it's going to be tying these two characters together through the tiniest of details and building them up into an inseparable pair of best friends, or lovers, rivals, whatever I want them to be. When I'm not writing fiction, I'm writing about relatable topics in my life, trying to think of what really matters most to me. The universe is massive, and in every single person is another even bigger universe, I'm just trying to build a bridge between universes.

There are writers who write because it feels good to let it out. There are writers who write because they just want to think of anything but their reality. And there are writers who want to make the real world just a little bit better, kind of like me and these articles. If any of my readers feel that way, you should go ahead and write! Write about anything, just do it! Pick up some paper, write about your day, make up a character, rant about that backstabbing friend you've been telling everyone about for weeks. Make your thoughts into reality, express yourself, open your universe up to the universe you live in and the universes that surround you. Be the person you want to be.

Friendship. It's defined as the state of being attached to another person by feelings of affection or personal regard, but what really is friendship? Is it that occasional hallway talk with that one person who always manages to cheer you up? Is it that relationship you have with someone where they can be gone for a long period of time, but when they come back, it's like they never left? Is it spending every waking hour with someone, and knowing every detail about their life? Is it the relationship that's filled with fighting, but filled with even more resolution? I've learned that it's all of these things, and every friendship is different. It's a beautifully dysfunctional mess that should always be cherished and never be taken for granted.
