When I first accepted to write for the Odyssey, I thought it would be easy. I love to write, and I write random things all the time, but I soon discovered that writing for a deadline does something to the head that makes it so that every idea you have is garbage: either it’s too boring or you’re not sure what to write at all. Then I decided to make my frustration into my topic. Why not? I'm a master at it anyways. So here’s what to do when you have writer's block.
1. Don’t force it.
If you can’t think of anything to write don’t force yourself to actually write. It will only make it harder and you’ll get frustrated with yourself.
2. Take a break.
Go for a walk, hang out with friends, whatever will help you feel relaxed. Chances are that you’ve thought about your work so much that you’ve dug yourself in a hole, and a break is exactly what you need.3. Write whatever comes into your head
Just write! It doesn’t matter if makes any sense or if it’s even in full sentences. Write random words, or start with an object that you see and then write what you think about because of that object. Maybe something will turn out because of it or maybe not, but it should help you get your brain in the writing mood.
4. Have an idea journal
Keep a journal full of random ideas. You can look at when you need inspiration.
5. Find somewhere where you enjoy writing.
Whether it’s at home, at a park, or maybe in your favorite bookshop, finding somewhere where you like to write will sometimes make the process easier. If you can’t seem to write at home, go to a park or somewhere else. If you decide that it works for, that’s great.
Writer's block can be a pain but don’t let it get to you. Good luck.
