10 Quotes By Writers On Writing

For those who are hoping to make a career from the pen, there are lots of mistakes that have to be made first. Drafts written and discarded, plots or characters that can't be developed, sentences that sound beautiful, but are ultimately meaningless. It can be a frightening experience sometimes, one that creates a lot of inner doubt and nerves. More than once I've looked around at the dog-eared and annotated books, the scribbled in notebooks, the post-its on the walls, and thought, "I should have chosen prelaw, premed, psychology -- anything but this."

In moments of doubt, though, I look to those who've made it. I look at what writers have to say about the process of writing. And it always comforts me; like the moment an author perfectly vocalizes a thought you've always had, it makes you feel validated and less alone. So for all those struggling, but hopefully not starving, writers out there, below are ten quotes about the peculiar, sometimes isolating, and often wonderful process of creation, as told by those who've done it.

1. "Writing is never easy... there are moments when you think you're a genius, but you're often disproved the next day." Patti Smith

2. "You have total control when writing about the future and you can research the past... The hardest thing to write about is now." Margaret Atwood

3. "The value of literature is that it's a place where everything can be said in every manner... Another name for that is liberty." Salman Rushdie

4. "If you're going to write fiction, you have to come to grips with the fact that there's a world out there that has nothing to do with you." Gary Indiana

5. "To choose to write is to reject silence." Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

6. "The artist who can show us our lives at this moment and help us fathom them is performing an essential role." Jennifer Egan

7. "Ultimately, the meaning of a word, like that of a person, is boundless, ineffable." Jhumpa Lahiri

8. "One of the amazing things about being a writer (and a human) is that you can't control what people think... Once you give your work to the world, it's no longer your own." Victor Lavalle

9. "Notebooks are good places for bad ideas." Austin Kleon

10. "You must always be unsure. Reach further inward to the empty space within you... let more happen." Colm Tóibín

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
