Are you dealing with writer's block? Don't worry it plagues everyone, even the people who don't want to write. The fiction and non fiction writers, the poets, play-writes, musicians, and probably me while I was writing this. So don't worry about it, here's 3 ways I shake off the dust when writer's block comes around.
1. Use a favorite.
Watch your favorite movie, listen to a song that incites emotion, or even eat your favorite food. There's something about a favorite that makes everything feel better. I know the second I eat mac and cheese it's like I'm under some magical blanket. Put yourself in the best state to write.
2. Assess an author.
Choose an author you admire. Pick the things this author does the best, the things you really like. Try to emulate them. Make yourself exercises to practice writing styles and vocabulary use. Think about the issues or topics that author writes about and try your own spin on them.
3. Word usage
This one was shown to me at a poetry writing workshop. Pick 5-20 words. They can be randomly generated, picked from a dictionary, some favorites, highlighted choices from a passage of text, anything. Then try to write something that uses all of these words without feeling forced. It will be awkward at first and probably not something that you would normally write, but it can spark something to run with and maybe give you a vocabulary expansion.
