We have all been there, staring at our computer screens, begging your mind to come up with something to write about. You sit and you stare until you think you are going crazy and you begin to panic because the paper is due at midnight and you still haven’t finished. Writer’s. Block. Two words that can turn a great time of creativity into turmoil. Anyone who has had to write a story or even a paper understands what it means to have writer’s block and it sometimes seems as though it is incurable. To make matters worse, when writer’s block occurs we usually forget all about ways to get rid of the block. Believe it or not, what you eat can play a crucial role in your ability to create. When you eat certain foods they help the brain work properly and in turn give it the essentials for proper processing. So here are 11 things to eat or drink in order to help your mind stay creative and your body healthy: these foods are not only good for helping you write but they are also good for preparing for a business meeting, or trying to finish a powerpoint presentation, as well as many other things.

  1. Complex Carbs (wheats, grains, rice, etc)- these give you glucose, a brain fuel, in a constant flow throughout the day.
  2. Natural Foods (from the farm to the plate)- things that haven’t been chemically tampered with are better for the brain and help in keeping out any brain fog
  3. Fatty Acids (seeds, nuts, oils, etc)- help in cognitive processes, happy brain=happy writing
  4. Coffee- gives brain a boost of energy and will in turn give your brain the energy to write
  5. Green Tea- for those who don’t like drinking coffee, this will give you the same effects as coffee but rumor has it it will also help keep your brain young
  6. Antioxidants (chocolate, vegetables, berries, etc)- keep the body healthy and free from sickness. You can’t write very well with a cold
  7. Baked Salmon (not fried)- boost the size of the learning center in the brain, with the ability to learn more comes the ability to write better
  8. Unhealthy Treats (dessert)- most sweets cause endorphins to be released in the brain, endorphins are basically the positivity giver of the brain
  9. Eggs- create choline which is a preliminary to neurotransmitters
  10. Water- almost half of your body is made up of water, water is essential to life
  11. Something new- eating something you have never eaten before can be a huge help in creativity, you never know what can come from a new flavor
  12. Your favorite food- at times all it takes is your favorite flavor for your mind to spiral into a world of creativity

Like anything else these foods must be eaten in moderation, too much of anything at one time can be very harmful to the body and mind. Find some recipes and learn your favorite ways to cook food. You never know, maybe cooking the chocolate brownie and eating it will lead to your next epiphany for a novel.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
