When Writer's Block Blows

Whether you write for a living or are writing an essay for a college class, writer's block can happen to anybody. Some causes of writers block can include the following: timing, fear, and perfectionism, Let's face it, sometimes the only time we have to write is a time when we aren't inspired, therefore giving us a serious case of writer's block. We can also be afraid that what we are writing is not coming across the way we want it to, or maybe we are afraid of what other's might say about it. And if you are like me, I want my writing to be absolutely perfect, but sometimes that can cause me to not know what to write about at all. Here are some things to do when writer's block blows.

Go for a walk.

In general, exercising is good for the brain. Exercise can help spurt brain growth, reduce stress, and improve brain function. Even if it is a short twenty-minute walk, just those twenty minutes of exercise can get the hormones in your brain flowing. Exercising helps to release endorphin which is a hormone that can cause your body to feel happy. What better time to write than when you're in a good mood?

Eliminate distractions.

Being able to sit down and focus can be difficult depending on the environment you are in. Some people may work better in a loud environment so they can block out the noise and solely concentrate on one thing. Others may get distracted easily. If you are one of those people that get easily distracted, try and find an environment that is quiet and will allow you to really try and find some inspiration for your writing.

Listen to music.

If you are one of those people that can have background noise while trying to focus, listening to music is a perfect choice. I personally enjoy listening to instrumental covers of hit songs such as "Toxic" by Britney Spears (aka the 'Beats for studying' station on Pandora). Find music that speaks to you, plug in some headphones, and get writing.

Talk to a friend.

I have done this before and it honestly helps. Sometimes I will get into conversations with friends on specific topics that may be popular in the news right now. Talking with other people really helps me when I have writer's block. I have received many article ideas by having a short conversation with a friend.

While there are many ways to overcome writer's block, there are also some things to avoid.

Don't procrastinate.

I will admit, I am very good at procrastinating (especially when it comes to doing my checkbook). But if you have writer's block, this is one thing you want to avoid. Sit down and just start writing, eventually, after a few minutes it will become easier and everything will flow onto your paper smoothly.

Don't wallow in self-pity.

Just because you have writer's block doesn't mean you're a bad writer. I'm sure J.K. Rowling has experienced tons of writer's block, but that didn't stop her from making one of the largest franchises in history. Take a deep breath and believe in yourself, you can do it.

What do you do when you have writer's block?

I'll never forget the day that someone told me these words: "Madison, I think you're a good friend to everyone but yourself." I stood there completely in awe of that statement. Before that day, I never really thought about being a friend to myself, and at the time, I didn't really know what it meant. Now, I realize that you can't fully be there for other people unless you're there for yourself, too. You can't show up for others until you're willing to show up for yourself.

Here are five things everyone should learn in order to be a better friend to themselves. These steps are hard, but they're so worth it.
