Why I Write

The importance of your passion when it comes to self-fulfillment.

Why I Write
Marketing Land

Why do I write? I write to release the build-up of emotions. I write to express what needs to be expressed. I write to calm my nerves, to settle the anger, or to get over the jealousy. I write because, when I write, It’s possible for me to believe in myself.

When I write, I am empowered with words, the most powerful thing anyone could obtain. I have all the power in the world when I write. I believe in myself whole-heartedly. The thing with writing is, I’m not trying to show anyone up. I’m not trying to compete with anyone. I’m writing because I love it and because I feel so good when I do. I write because I have something to say and it gives me a voice. Even if no one ever reads what I write, I still feel as if the typed or written words are stronger than if they were to be breathed. They are ingrained into the universe and marked into the world. A sound can be forgotten, but words will always remain.

I don’t write because I’m the best at it, because I’m not by any means. I write because it is what I love to do the most, and it doesn’t matter if I’m the best. It makes me happy, gives me confidence, and gives me a sense of belonging and drive. That’s what truly matters-- not if you are the best at something, but if you are happy doing it.

So I challenge you to find what you love and chase after it. You might not know what your passion is, but I promise you that if you keep searching you will stumble on it. For me, it just happens to be writing. For you, it could be something completely different. Anything. Everyone has a part they can play in their world but here's the thing- you have the capability to choose who you play. Will you drift on through your life doing something that you aren't 100% in love with? Or will you live life to the best of your ability-- one full of joy and self-fulfillment.

When it comes to doing what you love, it doesn't matter if you're the best at it. Chances are, you're not the best. There will always be someone better. But that shouldn't discourage you-- in fact it should drive you to be better, to learn more, and to keep pursuing. Look up at the success of others not in jealousy, but let it inspire you. Also, might I add that chances are someone is looking up to you. It may be hard to believe, but it's true.

Besides, when it comes to doing what you love, it doesn't matter if someone tells you that you aren't the best or that you're not good enough. Because if you love what you do enough, then you should keep feeding into your passion, learning more, and getting "better."

I hope that you're able to find the one thing that gives you all the joy and self-fulfillment that writing gives me.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
