It seems like I run into the same issue every week as I attempt to write a decent article about something readers actually care to read about. Trying to find something relatable, relative, entertaining and all-around unique is proving to be quite the task. I ended up asking a few friends what they would find interesting to read and received the following feedback.
1. The Kardashians
Ah, yes. Another story about America's "first family" and their all-around inspiring lifestyles. It's certainly difficult to keep up with them these days. How could you refuse?
2. An open letter
I wouldn't mind doing one of these, considering that I discovered a real passion for writing through letters to friends and family. They are, in my opinion, the best way to relay emotion and true feelings due to the lack of "face to face" pressure and the frequent obscurity of texting.
3. My first week of college
This will be a good one for when I actually get there. The moving in, the meeting the roommate, the getting lost, the community bathrooms and all that new freedom. Hopefully it'll be enticing and story worthy, but if I can't title it, "My Eccentric New Lifestyle," it'll just be a waste of time.
4. Something with funny GIFs
Actually, I believe the request was "Something funny with GIFs." Oh well.
5. The 2016 Presidential Election
This election will be the first one I can participate in. As a fresh face to voting, it's important for me to be as educated as possible about these candidates and to, hopefully, help to educate the public a little further, as well. Going into this one blind is definitely not going to "Make America Great Again."
I will, of course, never refuse to write an article about something I don't particularly enjoy, because what kind of journalist is a closed-minded one. I read somewhere that learning to become a good writer means extending yourself beyond the stuff you find interesting, because that's what flows most freely.
Picking topics that you aren't up to speed on or initially care about won't come as naturally, it'll take longer and it'll require some digging, but it allows you to expand your horizons, learn a few things and strengthen your ability to appease a wide audience.
So, whether it be the Kardashians, the 2016 Rio Olympics, a new scientific breakthrough, a movie review, the top 10 musical theater productions of the 21st century or a sappy ode to person or place, let me know what you are interested in reading by leaving me a comment below!
