Why I Write For Odyssey
Odyssey

Back in December of 2015, my college campus had established Odyssey Online to allow my fellow classmates and me to write and publish our own articles to share on our social media. I saw that some of my old high school classmates had been writing for the Odyssey at their campuses before my school gained the publication. I was always in awe while reading their articles and seeing it shared all over Facebook and Twitter. I remember being so excited when I heard Odyssey was coming to my school and jumped right on board when I heard the news. I started off as being just a Writer to becoming the Social Media Director as well just a few months after.

A lot of people don't like Odyssey and think it is immature and low-level writing, but it is the complete opposite. The staff on each campus are from students who want to expand and improve their writing abilities volunteer to write each week. Each writer on staff isn't an English or communications major like I am. In fact, a lot are studying biology, political science, music and more. I have read almost every article that is published from my campus and I can see the improvement of each writer almost every week, even in myself.

Odyssey has given me an opportunity to showcase my writing capabilities and start building up a portfolio of articles for when I graduate college and look for jobs in the same field. I started to write for Odyssey because I thought it would be fun but it helped me pick which career path I want to embark on; Journalism. I enjoyed writing while growing up, but I can truly say that Odyssey has helped me a lot on coming up with weekly topics, different article styles, and showcasing my work on social media, things that I need to do as a journalist. There is no greater feeling than seeing hundreds or thousands of people across the country share your work. It helps boosts my creative writing confidence when I see a large number of shares.

I enjoy being able to express and share my opinions to the world as a young adult. I am excited to continue writing many more articles in the future, no matter how much I forget I have an article due each Sunday. Who knows where Odyssey and my many articles will take me in the future, but things can only go up from here. Thank you, Odyssey.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
