Each of us remember having to take English all throughout school. I bet you remember having to spend an excruciating amount of time fulfilling requirements of journal entries about what you read or topics that mean absolutely nothing to you. You know, back during the time when no one really enjoyed writing at all. How writing just seemed to exhaust you in the worst possible way. The worst part, though, was never getting to pick your own topic.
You seemed as if you had to force yourself into "loving" to write so the class work got easier. However, writing isn't really like that at all. In fact, once anyone allows themselves to believe that, I'm sure they can end up finding joy in writing. Writing letters, lists, thoughts, or even a topic you want to write about gives you a voice. Writing allows you to be heard, even when no one else is listening.
Being able to get your thoughts down on paper is essential to healthy living. Going through every day without getting out what you really want to say can make you feel trapped. Or make you feel like you aren't as important, but you are and the words you speak (or write) do make a difference. The saying goes sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me. However, I say words have power and you should use them wisely. You never know who is listening or who will take pride in what you have to say.
Although you might not agree with me that writing frees your mind, that's alright. The people who do will continue to write pieces that will bring clarity to people's lives. Or express the emotions we all feel but can't ever really explain. That's the purpose writers serve. They truly are important.
