To Those Who Say I Am Getting A Worthless Degree

I love choice of major, regardless of what anybody says.

Why are education majors the ones who are constantly made fun of for their choice of major? Why do people think an education degree is so worthless? I have had people laugh in my face when I say I want to teach elementary school children. People say my major is not hard at all. People say my classes are so stupid and that I am trying to obtain a worthless degree. How is an education degree worthless? We will always need teachers. And I don’t see these people stepping up to get a degree where they will be helping the future generation of workers in the United States start their education career.

I used to be a Political Science major with a dream of going to law school. I went to a pre-law meeting and hated everything I heard about law school. I wanted to be able to help people with my profession and I knew that I could not be a doctor or a nurse because number one, I hate needles and hospitals and all that jazz...and two, I would have overwhelmed myself. Yes, science majors and engineers and all those majors have difficult classes they must take. Physics, chemistry, biology and calculus can be difficult for some people. I find science classes to be difficult because it is not something I enjoy. Those majors would be difficult for me to complete because the classes do not interest me. I understand if teaching does not interest some people. I really understand that. Why do those people say that education is so easy?

Yes, I think some of my classes are easy, but I want to see some of these critics be a teacher one day. The profession is not easy. It is not easy to learn enough information to be able to teach it to a group of students one day. It is not easy to calm down upset children or rowdy children. It is not easy to have to deal with any age group of students, whether they are little kids, middle schoolers or high schoolers.

I didn’t choose to become a teacher because I wasn’t capable of anything else. I could have gone to law school if I really pushed myself in my classes. The reason why I didn’t choose a Political Science major is because law school would not have been fun for me. I want to be able to go to work one day and feel like I’m not working a day in my life. I would not have enjoyed being a lawyer. If I really pushed myself, I could have been a Forensic Science major, but I don’t want to do science for the rest of my life. I want to help people and I chose to help little children. I will be giving them the early stages of their knowledge that they will be adding to in their future years of education. I will be teaching the future generations of doctors, engineers, artists, musicians, teachers, et cetera. I do not care about how much money I will be receiving. I want to make money doing something I love. I do not want to be a lawyer and potentially make a six figure salary when I wouldn’t be loving my job. So tell me why being an education major is so stupid. Please continue laughing in my face. I know my job is important and I cannot wait to start teaching one day.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
