Today I sat and thought about how fast things are going for me. How in two months I will be done with my Fall semester of my sophomore year in college. Thoughts like this make you think about how fast things are going or have gone. How you need to hurry up and pick your career path before it's too late. Being curious about if you will have any good plans after college? Or will you just settle for a job that has nothing to do with what you majored in? I know I am young in my college years but people are already expecting me to think of this. If you're that worried college student like me .. here are some things you might be worried about.
1. What Field Do I Specifically Want To Go In ?
If you go to a college like mine, they don't really go deep into concentrations when it comes to their majors. I come across this decision every day with what I actually want to do. I am a Psychology major at my college and there is not really any concentrations within the major. You just have to decide which career path you're leaning toward and take the classes that apply to that career path. Due to this I have decided that I want to double major with Health Sciences with a concentration in allied health. If you're so undecided like me and you always switch what you really think you want to focus on, for me its between Clinical Psychology and Mental Health or Adolescent Psychology, don't worry. You have time to decide, if you're a sophomore at least.
2. Are You Going To Study Abroad?
Personally thinking about studying abroad I was not really interested. Some people think it is a wonderful experience and others think that it's not that serious. That you will always have time to travel the world. I think if you are an Anthropology major for example or just a person that likes adventure, that would be the thing for you. I myself haven't really decided what I want to do yet regarding the study abroad option. For the person out there having this issue too I would just say think about it. Although don't wait too long. If you wait too long the opportunity might be gone.
3. What Graduate School Will I Go To? What Jobs Will I Get?
When talking about graduate school I would say start doing at least a little research. Know the type of degrees you might want after your Bachelors and research the schools that match. Know what programs you want to get into and where they are located. Try to have at least a few plans of what you would want your future to look like. Or where you want yourself to be by the time you graduate. Just start thinking about a plan and then a few back up plans. Be willing to have your options open .. but don't sell yourself short.
I wrote this article for this week because I myself am having a little trouble with my career choices. Not what I want to be in the future necessarily, but how likely will I be financially successful in the career field I want to be in. I wrote this to let any college student know that it's okay to worry. Although don't put these thoughts off for too long. Sooner or later we will be running out of time and choices will need to be made. Fast.
