Historically, World War II ranged from 1939 to 1945. Many brave soldier battled and sacrificed their lives to protect the freedoms of their fellow citizens. For people my age, and even a little older, we pay our respects to this grand conflict, but the battles were so long ago that we can not quite grasp the magnitude of that situation.
On November 16th, the people of Tallahassee were given a wide awakening history lesson as a World War II-era bomb was discovered in College Town by Gay Street. Construction workers had discovered the aged-weapon in the midst of a tree they were uprooting. According to a report by Tallahassee.com, the construction crew quickly contacted their supervisor who then notified the proper authorities about the bomb.
As a resident of Tallahassee, I was in shock about this discovery. How could a bomb be hidden in such a populated area for so long? The place where the bomb was found is full of residents, restaurants, and clubs that many people love and enjoy. It is horrible to even think about what could have occurred if that bomb had gone off on a night where everyone was out at Recess or Madison Social.
Fortunately, the situation was taken care of in a safe and orderly fashion. The Tallahassee Police Department and an Air Force Crew from the Tyndall Air Force Base detonated the bomb around 9:30 PM the same day it was found. The crews dug a deep hole in the ground, buried the bomb in the hole, and then blew it up. The sound of the explosion could be heard from miles around as seen in the video below.
After the bomb was detonated, everything went back to normal and the hysteria of the situation died down. However, for a brief moment, the memories and horrors of Word War II that once seemed so far away resurfaced in the quiet town of Tallahassee, Florida.
