Communication professor George Gerber created the term “mean world syndrome.” Mean world syndrome is a phenomenon in which violent mass media content makes people think that the world is more dangerous than it really is. As I scroll through my Facebook feed, I see numerous posts about the Orlando tragedy, Brock Turner, articles about a terrorist who took the lives of four civilians in Israel, and more personally, reactions to one of my campers who died suddenly and prematurely. I find I have to convince myself that these anecdotes are anomalies, that the world isn’t as mean as it seems, and that the way these stories are glorified, fetishized, and prioritized over uplifting news, is what deceives me.
As I stare at my computer screen, I can’t help but think that I can’t name one good piece of information I read while scrolling through my Facebook feed. For those who might be struggling with remembering that there are good things in this world, check out some positive media published recently.
