It’s no secret that the newest Marvel character to make its debut is a female. Brie Larson will be starring in the 2019 feature film, Captain Marvel, where she will portray the title role. This new superhero is assumed to be one of the strongest and fiercest characters Marvel has ever introduced – and she is a girl. Named after the franchise itself, this character will epitomize what it means to be a hero in their universe. At the end of Avengers: Infinity War, it was hinted that she would soon arise as her emblem appeared in the post-credits scene. Since and before DC Comics debuted their wildly successful film, Wonder Woman, there has not been a female character as the leading role in a self-titled film. In 2019, there will be two powerful women in positions to lead young women into believing they are just as strong-willed and capable as men.
Obviously people will argue that men are for the most part genetically stronger than women when it comes to physicality – however, with superpowers, they can make Captain Marvel into whatever they want her to be, which includes being stronger than the men in the Marvel Comics. I think the world needs another female superhero in order to deteriorate the stigma that only men can entertain people to the fullest potential with their strength. This goes for all movies as well – men are notoriously held on a pedestal in films and only recently have more women characters been idolized and offered leading roles.
Scarlett Johansson, for example, has not had a self-titled film as Black Widow yet even though she has portrayed the character in the Avengers franchise for four consecutive films and in Iron Man 2 in 2010. There have been rumors, however, that she will be granted with her own film in the future.
Either way, I’m glad Captain Marvel is going to be female, even though that is going to upset a lot of people since she will be regarded as the main superhero in the Marvel franchise. This film will help pave the way for more openings for women to be deemed strong and able and not inferior to men. Wonder Woman did this with her film and made a splash as people used her as a symbol of feminism and women empowerment. I believe Marvel’s newest movie will do the same.
