Over 300 million Americans live in the USA. However, it is one of the few countries where futbol is not the dominant sport. Instead it takes a backseat to baseball, basketball, and American football. This summer billions will tune in to the 2018 tournament . They are all vying for the highly coveted FIFA World Cup Trophy. So what makes the World Cup so special? Well it only comes around every four years so it has the prestige of the Olympics. 32 teams kick off the tournament, but only one will be crowned champion. Make sure to tune in from June 14-July 15.

1. The USA did not qualify

To all the American fans I am sorry to announce the US Men's team failed to qualify. Kind of embarrassing since the USA is one of the wealthiest countries in the world. Even all the money and development programs couldn't save them. They finished fifth in CONCACAF qualifying.

2. It is being held in Russia

Mother Russia will be holding the World Cup. This is the first time it will have this honor. Amid all the controversy the show will go on. Recent reports show that migrant workers were subjected to appalling working conditions in constructing the World Cup 2018 stadiums. Russia is also anti-LGBTQ and the fans are known for their racist chants against darker skinned players. So much for fair play right?

3. Run of play

During group stage teams will play two 45 minute halves. The two top teams from every group will move on to the elimination round. During this stage if a match is knotted up two 15 minute halves will be added in extra time. Should the score remain the same the match is sent to penalty kicks. Where 5 players on each side will take a PK. Teams are allowed three substitutes. Yellow card accumulation will result in a suspension. If your the gambling type bet on Germany for PK's not on the English side.

4. It's okay to cheer for the Mexican team

Let's face it friends soccer belongs to Mexico. El futbol es nuestro. Don't worry you can still cheer for Mexico no judgement. Mexico is our neighbor to the south. As good neighbors let's cheer them on. There are nearly 50 million Mexicans in the USA. We are all family. Not to mention the United States, Mexico, and Canada won a joint bid to host the World Cup in 2026. If your team didn't make it this summer cheer for any of the 32 teams. Let's just hope Mexico can keep a lead.

5. Whatever you do have fun

So I know sporting events can get heated so just have fun. The World Cup comes around only every four years. Take it in chances are the same players won't be there next time around. This is a great time to get together with family and friends. Remember the world will be watching.

If you have nothing to do this summer, watch the World Cup! It kicks off on June 14th.

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection.
