A World Without Culture Would Be A Very Boring Place

Racism is still alive in every aspect.

In the world, we have hundreds of different cultures. Some have existed since the beginning of time and others are brand new, taking the world by storm. It's amazing to think that no matter where you go, there is some kind of culture being shown. One of the art's biggest influences is culture. Sexual orientation, religion, literature, and so much more are forms of culture! However, the problem with today's world, especially in the United States, is that groups of people are trying to wipe out or mute certain cultures. Many religious groups travel the world talking about same-sex marriage. People of these religious cultures will say things like, "homosexuals will go to hell", or calling homosexuals an abomination. It has been known to tear families apart and ruin peoples' lives.

It's sad to think that there are these great cultures that are being shamed because they don't agree with someone else's culture. What would the world look like if all cultures were taken away? Imagine the world without style, expression, beliefs, or something to believe in. What would you think the world like that would be? I see a world filled with gray, darkness, and very plain. Everyone would talk the same, have the same language, same clothes, and same buildings. It would be impossible to have an open-mind to the world if the whole world was the same. No one would stand out or be extraordinary.

Sad right?! Why do we hate on other cultures that are not our own? I have been asking myself that question for as long as I can remember. The trust is that it is simple and closed-minded people that afraid of things are different. They want everything to be the same all around. In a way, it's like religious people calling homosexuality a sin. They want other people, that are different from them, to change who they are based on their religious views.

This is the problem. We as citizens can be very entitled. We all have our beliefs; but the problem is not having our beliefs, which is actually a good thing, it's when we force our views on someone else. Where does this all begin? Many would believe school.

Bullying in schools is one of the most common places where this all begins. Students alienate others because they are not like the mass majority of the population in that area. It's why students hate being the new kid in a new environment. You don't know anyone and nine times out of ten, you will be different from the students that grew up there. So how can we change this? In my opinion, to the best of our ability, we need to teach students to respect; keep an open mind about different values.

Racism is still alive in every aspect. They major factors that can change that is parenting and schooling. I know it won't be easy or simple, it will take years. We need to push harder and challenge the norms of society so that every culture knows that they belong in this world.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
